Nintendo Switch Setup Guide

Setting Up Your System

The Nintendo Switch includes a console unit, two detachable Joy-Con controllers, a dock, AC adapter, and HDMI cable.

To connect to a TV, plug the AC adapter into the dock and a power outlet. Connect the HDMI cable from the dock to your TV. Insert the console into the dock to charge and begin TV mode. The screen will go dark while docked, and the video output will display on your television.

You can also play in handheld mode by attaching the Joy-Con controllers to each side of the console. For tabletop mode, use the built-in kickstand and detach the Joy-Cons to play wirelessly.

Charging

The system charges while docked or when plugged directly into the AC adapter via USB-C. Joy-Con controllers charge while attached to the console during charging. A full system charge typically takes about 3 hours.

Playing Games

Insert physical game cards into the slot located on the top right of the console, with the label facing up. You can insert or remove cards while the system is powered on—just be sure to exit the game first.

Wi-Fi and Online

To connect to Wi-Fi, go to System Settings > Internet > Internet Settings, choose your wireless network, and enter your password. Internet access is required for system updates, Nintendo eShop, and online multiplayer features.

Parental Controls

Parents can manage screen time and restrict games using the free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls mobile app. You can also access basic settings directly on the console under System Settings > Parental Controls.
